Chester had a busy first week. They did a lot of scans. Everything looks normal structurally with Chester. He had a normal echo and EKG. On Thursday, they removed his breathing tube, and he has been off it ever since! He is on a BiPAP (like a CPAP) to help him get enough oxygen to breathe. This is rare for a baby his age. He started to get mom’s breastmilk via a feeding tube. Mommy and daddy learned how to do his “cares” where they can help wipe his eyes, clean his mouth, readjust the oxygen sensor on his leg, and change his diaper. On Sunday, Caroline was able to hold Chester skin-to-skin during his first kangaroo care time; they both loved it. Chester did have a brain ultrasound and has a level 1 bleed that is stable. It is too early to know what this means, but it’s something the doctors are monitoring closely. Chester is an active boy, and the nurses comment on how active and feisty he is. He has very long limbs and enjoys grabbing Mommy and Daddy’s fingers. He had quite the grip on him. He is doing very well and after a week, is back to his original birth weight. A special moment of the week was ringing in the new year together as a family before Mommy and Daddy went home from the hospital for the first time. This was a nice way to decompress after a busy few first days.
